States
The First Amendment and federal legislation offer important protections for religious liberty, but there are many areas where states can protect, or refuse to protect, religious freedom. Religious Liberty in the States considers 47 distinct ways that states protect, or decline to protect, the ability of Americans to act on their religious convictions.
On each state page linked below, you can view a summary of how that state measures up to the potential for protecting free exercise. Each state page features a link to a one-page state scorecard. The scorecards are useful to those who are curious about individual states, wish to compare a subset of states to each other, or seek an easy way to communicate more effectively about legal protections of religious liberty with their neighbors or elected officials.
